The Chargers are playing with heavy hearts on Saturday afternoon, as they prepare for their NFL Wild Card showdown with the Houston Texans amid wildfires ripping through the greater Los Angeles area.

While the athletes will receive a lion’s share of the attention, they’re focusing on the real heroes, deciding to honor the Los Angeles Fire Department with custom apparel that they’ll rep during pregame warmups. Moreover, the game will kickoff at 4:30 p.m. ET, and the Chargers are favored over the reigning AFC South champions in the Texans. If Los Angeles is able to get the win, it’ll provide a bit of a morale boost to their fans affected by the wildfires raging in their home state.

Jim Harbaugh, the first-year head coach of the Chargers, made sure to point out the impact the wildfires have had on his team’s preparation, believing the unity of California’s public amid difficult times will be something that inspires his players.

“Heart goes out, prayers, abundant prayers for all those that have been affected by this tragedy,” Harbaugh said, regarding the wildfires, via the team’s website. “Also just been inspired greatly by the first responders, the firefighters and the residents that have pulled together, had each other’s back. It’s been tremendously inspiring. Abundant prayers and thoughts to all that are in this fight. You see neighbors on top of houses, helping fellow neighbors, it’s truly inspiring.

“It’s powerful, what we’re witnessing. Fellow man, fellow citizens of Los Angeles, it is inspiring the way they’ve jumped in, the way they’ve pulled together, doing anything they can to protect their homes, their neighbors homes. Not just their own. It’s powerful, It’s resonating. I can speak for me, Sarah, my kids and my family, our thoughts and prayers are with all that are in this daily fight.”

All told, Harbaugh knows his team is ready to roll, and they’re making it their mission to make the State of California proud with their play. They know how much is at stake.

“For all concerned about us, we’re safe, we’re on mission,” Harbaugh added. “Our thoughts and prayers with those that are right there centrally in the fight. … We’re on a mission. Mission is to go 1-0 this weekend.”

The thoughts and prayers of the football world remain with California. We’ll see if the Chargers can provide a reprieve for a few hours and play some inspired football in Houston against the Texans.
