Chargers bring in Eli Apple after key injury in secondary

Apple went unsigned in free agency but will now get a chance to contribute with the Chargers placing Asante Samuel Jr. on injured reserve Saturday.

The Chargers’ defense has been impressive under first-year defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, ranking second in EPA/play allowed, third in success rate and first in rush EPA. Los Angeles has the league’s No. 6 ranked offense, allowing 289.2 yards per game. The Chargers have surrendered just 13.2 points per game, the fewest amount of any team in the NFL.
