Los Angeles Lakers release video of phone call to Bronny James from the NBA Draft
The Los Angeles Lakers made some special history with their selection of Bronny James in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft. The franchise has since shared an exclusive look at the moment where they made the specific pick.
The Lakers shared the video of them selecting James with the 55th pick on Thursday on social media earlier today.
“I think – first and foremost, you’ve worked incredibly hard, man. You’ve put in a ton of work. When we had lunch up at the facility for your workout, we talked about your work ethic and that means a lot to us. I think, second to that, you’re a player of high character, a person of high character and that is valued at the Lakers,” said Rob Pelinka, LA’s GM and VP Basketball Operations, to James. “It’s important for Coach Redick and I to let you know those qualities really stand out. And so the Lakers are going to draft you with the 55th pick in the draft.”
“I just wanted to say congrats, man,” added JJ Redick, the new head coach of the Lakers. “Your hard work has paid off. You’re going to have a long NBA career and I can’t wait to coach you man.”
With those messages shared, Los Angeles then made the call to the league in order to select James, which, naturally, led to plenty of applause around their room.
Many long expected James to become a Laker to join his father, LeBron James, in the NBA. He developed into a one-and-done prospect after a season at USC. Now, his own basketball journey has led him to yesterday where he earned the opportunity to make the association. As such, that has given him the chance to play with his dad and vice versa.

James was one of two selections for Los Angeles in the NBA Draft. They also arguably got one of the bigger steals during the two-day proceedings with them also picking Tennessee’s Dalton Knecht at No. 17 overall in the first round.
This moment was a long time coming for the James’ as well as the Lakers. This is just the first step, though, with there going to be plenty more hype around this story going into the summer and then his rookie season, which will also be 22nd for LeBron.
