Luka Doncic reveals shattered phone from night of trade to Lakers from Mavericks

Luka Doncic‘s iPhone is looking a little rough these days. That’s because, the night he was informed he was being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers from the Dallas Mavericks, he threw it and shattered it.
“It still works,” Doncic told ESPN‘s Malika Andrews in a sit-down interview.
Doncic was angry, sad, just about every emotion you can imagine after Dallas flipped him to Los Angeles for a package centered around All-Star power forward Anthony Davis. In terms of shock and awe, this trade is at the top of list in both the history of the NBA and professional sports as a whole.
Doncic was coming off five straight All-NBA First Team selections. He led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals just last season, coming up short in five games against the Boston Celtics. Doncic accomplished it all before the age of 26. Dallas was to be a force moving forward with Doncic leading the way.
But on the early morning of Feb. 2, Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison decided Doncic would no longer be the face of the franchise. No longer would he be a Maverick.
“I was actually in bed… was watching a movie and about to go to sleep,” Doncic said. “First thing I said probably three times was, ‘Is this April 1?’ … Sadness, I was still in shock, and I felt like my heart was broken.”

Mavs GM Nico Harrison defends trading Luka Doncic
Harrison has taken a lot of heat from the Dallas fanbase, as well as league pundits. He opened up to reporters earlier this week in a closed-door, no cameras meeting. Harrison, who previously said he didn’t feel the team that went to the NBA Finals last season with Doncic as the centerpiece could continue to contend for championships, told reporters that “defense wins championships.” Doncic had the following to say when Andrews read the quote out loud to him:
“It’s just sad the way he is talking right now,” Doncic said. “I never said anything bad about him, and I just want to move on. The fans, my ex-teammates will always make it hard, but it’s time for me to move on.”
Doncic will be competing for an NBA title this season with the Lakers and alongside LeBron James. The Lakers host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday in Game 1 of their Round 1 matchup.
The Mavericks, meanwhile? Well, they travel to play the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday in the Play-In Tournament for the chance to earn the No. 8 seed. Win that one and awaiting them will be the 68-win, No. 1 seed Oklahoma City Thunder.
