Magic Johnson calls out Anthony Edwards' critique of '90s basketball: 'Never respond to a guy that's never won a championship'
Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards recently made waves when he claimed in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that he didn’t think many NBA players outside of Michael Jordan really had skill in the ’90s.
That comment didn’t sit too well with one Earvin “Magic” Johnson.
Johnson was asked about Edwards’ comments at a Legends Dinner Series speaking engagement with ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith at the Yaamava’ Resort and Casino. He did not hold back.
“Well you know, I don’t never respond to a guy that’s never won a championship,” Johnson said. “Not nothing to really say. He didn’t win a college championship. I don’t know if he even won a high school championship. So for him to say there were no athletes or no great players, just Michael Jordan, what they don’t understand Michael Jordan didn’t win until his sixth, seventh year. So I guess it was some great players before Michael Jordan.”
For the record, Anthony Edwards did win a championship in high school, securing the GISA 3A state title as a junior at Holy Spirit Prep School in Georgia.
And to his credit, Magic Johnson certainly didn’t seem to have any animosity toward Edwards, no matter how the quote above reads.

“Like I said, I love him. I love his smile, I love his game, Anthony Edwards,” Johnson said. “But you’ve got to achieve something before you can start making big statements like that. If I’m him I’m just saying you know what, we had a great run, we won the gold medal. I’m disappointed by what happened last (NBA) season, we didn’t win the championship. And work on that. Right?”
Johnson, of course, would know a thing or two about winning championships.
He was a five-time NBA champion in the 1980s, claiming three NBA Finals MVP awards. He was a 12-time All-Star. He also won the 1979 NCAA title while at Michigan State. He even won an Olympic gold medal with the 1992 Dream Team.
So yeah, Johnson is certainly entitled to speak his piece on Edwards.
As much as anything, the former Lakers superstar chalked up Anthony Edwards’ comments to simply being in the Internet and social media age.
“So now with clicks and views, everybody’s caught up into that everybody want to say something to get more views and more followers,” Johnson said. “But when you come at me or come at us, I’m going to always come back.”
