Caleb Williams has been as covered as any athlete over the last year or so as a winner of The Heisman Trophy and the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He’s not above criticism, though, as Marcus Spears reminded people today.

Following a tweet of Spears’ about Williams’ debut with the Bears earlier, someone responded saying that his network keeps them from honestly finding fault in their coverage of him. Spears quoted back to clarify how wrong that take really is about them at ESPN.

“These rookies learning this shit ain’t the same as that preseason lol!! Bo, Caleb and Jayden,” Spears wrote about the rookie quarterbacks today.

This comes after Williams was alright at best in his first game in the NFL. He went 14-29 (48.3%) for 93 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He also rushed for 15 yards off of five carries with Tennessee sacking him twice on the day.

That obviously didn’t live up to what the Bears expect from him statistically. However, the most important part was that it helped his team to a 24-17 comeback win against the Titans. That made it the first winning outing in the debut for a rookie quarterback in over two decades.

With the hype around him, Williams is certain to get as much unjustified praise and hate as he does of the deserved amount. Still, when it comes to Spears, he’s not going to cover anyone, including Williams, any differently just because of his respective network.

Williams becomes first No. 1 overall QB to win rookie debut since 2002

Quarterbacks who are selected in the top of the draft are usually put in extremely difficult situations. However, the Chicago Bears surrounded Caleb Williams with one of the best situations a rookie could ever dream of.

Because of that, Chicago won 24-17 and, in the process, allowed their No. 1 overall pick to make some history. Williams became the first No. 1 overall quarterback to win his rookie debut since 2002.

On Sunday afternoon, the Bears defense carried Williams. They and their special teams unit had two touchdowns on Sunday. That fuel their comeback over Tennessee after they were down 17-3 at halftime.
