Marlon Humphrey stands by calling photo of Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles bowing to fellow Olympian 'literally disgusting'
The photo of United States Olympians Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles bowing to Brazilian gold medalist Rebeca Andrade at the 2024 Paris Olympics quickly became one of the iconic shots of the games. Fellow medalists Biles and Chiles were lauded for their grace and class, and Andrade for her athletic achievement.
Though one NFL player didn’t like it, as Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey referred to it as “literally disgusting.” His gripe, as he explained it, is that people shouldn’t be bowing to each other in general.
On a recent episode of his podcast — “Punch Line” — Humphrey explained his stance.
“Dude, lemme tell you my perspective,” Humphrey said. “I get on … Twitter, I was like, what the frick? Why are we bowing to anybody? This is freaking America, why are we bowing to another country? I didn’t even know what country that was, honestly. I just seen two people bowing. I said, ‘This is crazy.’ Just from a whole human perspective, ethical, should never bow to no man except God. So I said, ‘Golly this is wild.'”
Humphrey’s original tweet got plenty of attention, and he argued even a firestorm of negativity was still positive, as “he doesn’t believe in bad media.”

He also said it was “kinda fire” that Michelle Obama took notice. The former First Lady was, naturally, supportive of Biles, Chiles and Andrade.
Humphrey recently had foot surgery
Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh confirmed in mid-August that Humphrey underwent surgery for a foot injury he picked up during training camp.

Harbaugh declined to say exactly when Humphrey would return, however, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the hope is that Humphrey is back in a “little over a month.”
“He had the surgery,” Harbaugh said. “It went very well, and I would say that the timeline is pretty well defined. I’m not gonna give it to ya, but it’s not super long. When he’s getting close, you’ll know. So you don’t need to ask probably for a few weeks. He’s gonna be back pretty early in the season and he’ll be ready to roll.”
Harbaugh, entering his 16th season at the helm, added it was Humphrey’s decision to move forward with the surgery.
“The good thing about the surgery just to give you a little background, he could’ve definitely played with it the way it was, but you do risk it getting worse. With the surgery that he got, it’s taken care of,” Harbaugh said. “So when he comes back, he won’t have to be concerned for the rest of the season. And it was Marlon’s decision, and that’s why he decided to go ahead and get that done.”
