Kansas City Chiefs receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown is not expected to play in the 2024 regular season, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Brown was placed on injured reserved Friday for a shoulder injury that will require surgery. There is still a chance that he could return for the postseason, but he is not expected back before mid-January.

Brown suffered the injury in the first preseason game for the Chiefs on Aug. 10. He was set to enter his first season with the team after signing a one-year contract worth $7 million this offseason.

The receiver was getting ready for his sixth NFL season after being taken as a first round pick out of Oklahoma in 2019. He has recorded 3,644 yards and 28 touchdowns across his career with both the Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals.

Brown had his best season with the Ravens in 2021 as he caught 91 passes for 1,008 yards and six touchdowns. That is still the only year in which he surpassed the 1,000-yard mark, and he was traded to Arizona the next season.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time injuries have interfered with Brown over the past few seasons. He missed five games in 2022 due to a fractured foot and also sat out another three this past year.

It’s a huge blow for the Chiefs, who were expecting Marquise Brown to operate as one of the top weapons for quarterback Patrick Mahomes alongside Travis Kelce. Instead it looks like Kansas City will depend a lot more on Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy this season.

The Chiefs are coming off of their second straight Super Bowl victory and looking to become the first team to ever win three in a row. They take on the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2 at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday.
