Martin Truex Jr. details NASCAR plans after announcing retirement: 'I'll probably run the Daytona 500'
Martin Truex Jr. may be retiring from full-time competition after the 2024 season, but that doesn’t mean he’s completely done with the NASCAR Cup Series.
Speaking on the “Dale Jr. Download” this week, Truex said he will “probably” run the 2025 Daytona 500, one of few things he hasn’t yet conquered in his Hall of Fame career.
“It’s almost a guarantee that I feel like right now that I’ll probably run the Daytona 500, which not a done deal yet but I feel like it shouldn’t be too hard to finish that up,” Truex said.
Denny Hamlin, Truex’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, has already said he would have a car ready for him at 23XI Racing if he wants to run the Daytona 500 next season.
“I’ve told him that I will have his Daytona 500 car ready immediately. Just tell me the word,” Hamlin said. “… 100%, I would [add a car to 23XI for Daytona if Truex wanted to race]. 100% I would do that.”

Martin Truex Jr. walking away from NASCAR after Hall of Fame career
Truex, 44, announced his retirement from the sport last month, and JGR subsequently announced last week that Chase Briscoe will replace him in the No. 19 car. Truex has won 34 races across 19 seasons in NASCAR’s premier series, including two Coca-Cola 600s and a Southern 500.
He reached the mountain top in 2017 driving the No. 78 Toyota for Furniture Row Racing, winning his first and only Cup Series championship. Truex tallied eight checkered flags that season and capped it off with a victory in the season finale at Homestead-Miami. Truex has a chance to go out on top, currently sitting fifth in the points standings.
Beyond the Daytona 500, Truex sees himself competing in a handful of other races.
“I’ll definitely run a few Xfinity races,” Truex said. “I don’t know if that’s two or if that’s five or six, so we gotta look at the schedule and see where I would like to run. I feel like it would be cool to do a little bit more to get something going for Ryan [his brother]. You know, if we could split a car for a certain amount of races, maybe even a few Truck races here and there if I could put something together.”
