Mason Crosby preparing for NFL season despite remaining a free agent
For the first time since 2006, Mason Crosby isn’t getting ready for Green Bay Packers training camp. He’s still a free agent after his contract expired — but that’s not stopping him from preparing for the season.
“Never count anything out in this game,” Crosby told ESPN Wisconsin, via Forbes’ Rob Reischel. “Weird stuff happens every year and you never know. You never know what’s going to happen.”
The Packers selected Crosby in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft and he played his entire 16-year career with them. In that time, he became Green Bay’s all-time leading scorer with 1,918 points while making 81.4% of his field goal attempts.
That run appears to be over, though, as Crosby remains a free agent — the first time he’s ever been on the open market — and Green Bay selected former Auburn kicker Anders Carlson in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Still, as training camps prepare to open across the NFL later this month, Crosby wants to keep himself in shape in case an opportunity comes about.
“I’m getting myself ready for training camp and feeling good,” Crosby said. “I’m excited for what this next opportunity holds, and we’ll see what happens.
“It’s been unreal that this is the first time in 16 years that I’ve been a free agent. Been so fortunate and really thankful that through all these years I’ve been able to get a deal done with the Packers before I ever tested the market. So, it’s a little bit unknown.”
