Massive fire breaks out at Ryder Cup venue Marco Simone's 18th hole
Following the conclusion of the Ryder Cup between the USA and Europe last week, a fire broke out on Thursday at the Marco Simone Golf Club. The club, situated in Guidonia Montecelio, on the outskirts of Rome, could be seen in a blaze from a distance.
The fire, the cause of which is undetermined, appears to have broken out in the grandstands at the 18th hole, which is still erect following the conclusion of the tournament.
According to an Italian news site, Agenzia Nova, three teams are working on the site of the fire with two tankers, a ladder truck and the Rome fire brigade’s Tas unit.
The report states: “A three-story structure of approximately 120 square meters is burning. The building is completely engulfed in flames. Officers from the Rome police station were also on site.”

No one hurt in fire at Marco Simone
“A fire was reported in one of the temporary hospitality structures to the right of the first fairway at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club earlier this afternoon,” a statement from Ryder Cup Europe read. “Local fire crews were called to the scene at 5:07 p.m. local time and quickly brought the blaze under control. Nobody was injured in the incident and the fire did not spread beyond the hospitality structure. There was no damage to the golf course or any over structure. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.”
Luckily for thousands of spectators, the Ryder Cup wrapped up last week. Team Europe beat Team USA to reclaim the Ryder Cup, 16.5 to 11.5. It was a heated tournament with drama bubbling up from both sides.
“The flames were put out without further damage and without affecting areas outside the sports complex,” Mayor of Guidonia Mauro Lombardo shared. “I would like to thank all those who intervened in the firefighting operations.”
