Matt LaFleur addresses Packers' decision to release Jacob Eason
Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur revealed the reason they released former Georgia Bulldogs and Washington Huskies quarterback Jacob Eason. While speaking to the media on Tuesday, LaFleur explained that having four quarterbacks on the roster can be challenging in terms of training camp reps.
“It’s hard to rep four quarterbacks, LaFleur said. “It limits everybody, and I’m appreciative of Jake coming in here and competing. He did a lot of good things. But at the end of the day, I think it’s more important to really focus and try to get a guy like a [Michael] Pratt in this instance more reps. Hopefully, that can translate to success in the games.”
Eason signed with the Packers on July 23. At that time, Packers starting QB Jordan Love was not practicing as he was waiting to sign a new contract extension. When Eason was signed, he was aware that he likely wouldn’t be with the team for very long since the Packers already had three quarterbacks on the roster.
“I’m going to do what I can to learn this offense and take advantage of the opportunities I do get,” Eason said, per Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated. “Obviously, whatever the coaches decide to do, they’re going to do, and that’s completely out of my control. I’m just here to get better and help the team in any way that I can.”
