Matt Nagy is expected to receive interest from the New Orleans Saints for their head coaching vacancy, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.

Nagy, who’s in the middle of his second stint as the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator, was previously the head coach of the Chicago Bears. The Saints fired head coach Dennis Allen mid-season and handed the keys to interim head coach Darren Rizzi.

But Nagy might receive the most interest from New Orleans.

“Expect the Saints to show interest in former Bears head coach and current Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy,” Russini wrote. “I also expect interim head coach Darren Rizzi to get a shot at the job full time but, if he doesn’t get it, I could see him still being part of the coaching staff in New Orleans, in some form. The team could also look at (Mike) McCarthy if he becomes available…”

Nagy went 34-31 in four seasons as the Bears’ head coach. In his first season (2018), Nagy led the Bears to a 12-4 record and NFC North title but lost at home in the Wild Card Round to the Philadelphia Eagles.

It was the famed “double-doink” game where kicker Cody Parkey’s potential game winning kick hit the post twice for a miss.

After missing the playoffs the following year, the Bears snuck in at 8-8 in 2020 but lost to, ironically, the Saints in the Wild Card Round. Nagy was fired after a 6-11 campaign in 2021.

Nagy served as the Chiefs’ QB coach from 2013-15 before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2016, spending two years in the role. He helped coach Patrick Mahomes as a rookie.

He returned to the Chiefs in 2022 as a senior assistant and QBs coach and was promoted back to OC in 2023, reuniting with head coach Andy Reid and Mahomes.

A former Arena Football League quarterback, Nagy played his college football at Delaware. He actually had a brief practice squad stint with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009, doubling as a coaching intern.

Starting his official coaching career in Philadelphia in 2010 as an assistant, Nagy has learned for over a decade under Reid.

Perhaps a fresh start as a head coach could turn positive for him and the Saints, who cratered following an explosive 2-0 start.
