Now that Matt Ryan is not wearing an NFL uniform — at least for now — he’s opening up about the last two seasons of his career. The former Atlanta Falcons star and Indianapolis Colts quarterback didn’t mince any words, either.

Ryan was traded by the Falcons to the Colts ahead of the 2022 season. He had spent his entire career in Atlanta until last season. His arrival in Indianapolis provided fans with hope and optimism that their team might be a threat in the AFC once again.

Not so much. Instead, the Colts stumbled to a 4-12-1 season. Ryan threw 14 touchdown passes with 13 interceptions in 12 starts. And in an interview with The Athletic, Ryan opened up about the last portion of his career.

“I mean, it was a s–tshow, you know, it was a s–tshow of 18 months basically is the best way to describe it,” Ryan said, per Josh Kendall of The Athletic. “But I think everybody in our family handled it well and came out of it stronger and in a really good spot.”

Although his career ended roughly, Ryan has the credentials of a potential Hall of Famer. He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection and was named the league’s MVP in 2016. Ryan also led the Falcons to an appearance in Super Bowl LI, coming up just short of winning a ring.

Ryan spent most of his career regarded as one of the most proficient passers in the NFL. Unfortunately, his career didn’t end on a positive note. That is, if he’s actually played his final game.

Matt Ryan doesn’t shut the door on returning to the NFL

Although Ryan enjoyed a lengthy 15-year career in the NFL, he’s not closing the door on his playing days quite yet. The 38-year-old still believes he’s got a little bit left in the tank if a team offers.

“I’m staying in shape,” he said. “I think it is kind of, ‘You know my number. You know where I’m at.’ If anything were to come up, you know, we’ll see. (CBS) is where my focus is at right now. But we’ll see how the season shakes out.”

Ryan heads into the 2023 NFL season as an analyst for CBS. But it wouldn’t be surprising to see a team pick up the phone and give the veteran QB a call if the need arises.

Just something to keep an eye on throughout the course of the season.
