Matthew Golden fires up Green Bay crowd after being taken by Packers in 2025 NFL Draft

New Green Bay Packers wide receiver Matthew Golden fired up the home crowd after he was selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The former Texas pass catcher was the first wide receiver selected by the Packers in the first round in over 20 years.
Golden hijacked the mic at the podium on the NFL Network broadcast and decided to get the crowd riled up. Green Bay was quite the host for the first two nights of the draft.
In typical football fashion, he wanted a Green Bay chant on three. No, not this company, the count of three!
Like many in this year’s cycle, Golden is a three-year college player. Two different schools were considered home at different points, though. Houston won his high school recruitment. One where he was a four-star prospect and No. 176 overall player out of Houston (TX) Klein Cain in the 2022 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Texas came calling ahead of the 2024 season when Steve Sarkisian was in search of two new big-time receivers. The move worked out nicely for both sides. Golden set career highs across the board, catching 58 passes for 987 yards and nine touchdowns.
His number was called more and more down the stretch, too. The College Football Playoff quarterfinal against Arizona State was Golden’s best game, going for 149 yards and a touchdown on seven receptions.

Taking Golden this high in the draft means he projects as a potential WR1. He showed the ability to adapt to a new environment and find success once he had settled in. Doing so at the next level will be a different kind of test but Golden appears ready for whatever is thrown his way.
Golden wasn’t the only wide receiver selection by the Packers. They also took TCU wideout Savion Williams with the No. 87 overall pick (round three). That was after a pick of offensive tackle Anthony Belton (NC State) in the second round.
Williams spent five seasons with the Horned Frogs and started getting a bigger role in Year 3. This past season, Williams finished with 60 catches for 611 yards, six touchdowns and 10.2 yards per carry.
Over the course of his career, Williams had 137 catches for 1,655 yards, 14 touchdowns and 12.1 yards per catch. He continually had more production each season at TCU.
