Matthew Stafford uncertain about NFL future following playoff loss
Matthew Stafford was mum about his future in the NFL following the Los Angeles Rams’ 28-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Divisional Round.
“Matthew Stafford did not want to talk definitively about his future after this season so quickly after the loss,” The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue wrote on Twitter. “I asked Stafford if he believes he still has some football left in him, and with a half-grin he said, ‘sure feels like it.’”
Stafford finished the game 26-of-44 passing for 324 yards and two touchdowns, but was sacked five times. He led the Rams to another NFC West title and a 1-1 record in this year’s playoffs.
A former No. 1 overall pick out of Georgia in 2009, Stafford played for the Detroit Lions through the 2020 season before being traded to Los Angeles in 2021.
He won Super Bowl LVI over the Cincinnati Bengals in his debut season with the Rams and made the playoffs three of four years in LA.

In his career, Stafford has 59,809 yards, 377 touchdowns, 188 interceptions and a 63.4% completion percentage. He ranks No. 10 all-time in passing yards and touchdowns.
“He represents so many things that are right about what this team became, especially for a city that’s hurting and going through some different stuff,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said Sunday after the loss. “I think he epitomizes a lot of the stuff that’s right, in terms of toughness, resilience, ability to overcome adversity.
“He’s a total freaking stud, and I thought he was outstanding tonight with the opportunities that he was given. There was a couple things in some of those earlier, you know, short yardage situations where, you know, we didn’t get targeted, and I could have done a better job for us, but I’m sure damn proud of Matthew Stafford.”
Stafford is still under contract for two more years with the Rams and is scheduled to earn a base salary of $23 million next season.
