Max Homa hits course marshal with approach shot during The Masters 2025

Max Homa was on target during the first round of The Masters on Thursday. That is, if his desired target was an Augusta National Golf Club course marshal.

Of course, it was not, but that’s where his approach shot on the par-5 eighth landed. Homa hit his tee shot left of the fairway, forcing him to punch out from behind a tree in the rough. The problem, however, was a course marshal was standing in the middle of the fairway holding a flag. Homa’s ball bounced once off the fairway and into the back of the marshal before settling just to the right.

“Come on, dude,” a frustrated Homa yelled out.

The course marshal will often stand with a flag in the fairway notifying those behind him that the green is not clear. Since Homa wasn’t aiming for the green, he went ahead and hit his second shot. It was an unfortunate bad break for Homa, who had bogeyed two of the three prior holes.

Homa recovered to make par on the eighth, leaving him even par heading into nine. He finished two over (74), leaving him with work to do on Friday to make the cut — something Homa has struggled to do this season. Homa has competed in eight PGA Tour events this season. He missed five consecutive cuts coming into The Masters.

Homa has seldom been a contender in majors throughout his career. The 34-year-old finished T3 in last year’s Masters but has just one other top 10 finish in a major (T10, 2023 Open Championship). He is currently one over seven holes through his second round, +3 and T60 for the tournament.
