Report: Dolphins receiver Odell Beckham Jr will open training camp on PUP list

Miami Dolphins receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will not be on Miami’s active roster as training camp gets underway, according to a report from Jeff Howe.

Instead, Beckham will be on the PUP list, also known as the physically unable to perform list, as training camp begins Wednesday.

Odell Beckham Jr. can remain with the team while on the PUP list, but he is not able to practice with the Dolphins.

The veteran has struggled with injuries in recent years, but the Dolphins are hopeful he will be a key contributor during the 2024 season.

Beckham signed with Miami after spending last season with the Baltimore Ravens. He helped Lamar Jackson and the Ravens to the AFC Championship Game last year before Baltimore lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Odell Beckham Jr. finished second on the Ravens team last season with 35 catches for 565 yards and three touchdowns across 14 games.

Beckham signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins in May. The 31-year-old is a former LSU star who was taken in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Beckham was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in his first season in the league.

He has been named an All-Pro on two separate occasions and was also named a Pro Bowler three times. He is joining a Dolphins passing attack that is led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

Mike McDaniel recognizes how special having Odell Beckham Jr. as part of his receiving corps could be with the Miami Dolphins.

The franchise agreed to a 1-year, $3M deal with Beckham Jr. earlier this offseason, with incentives that can push it up to $8.25M. Now, the media and fans of the team alike are chomping at the bit to see him on the field, but McDaniel and company aren’t going to rush things with their new wide receiver.

“So the head to toe came for him has worked well. You guys haven’t seen him,” McDaniel said sarcastically, joking about Beckham Jr.’s appearances at Dolphins’ camp. “He’s been right in the middle of the field. No, I think these are always funny. Everybody’s excited to see players when they first get here, especially, and a player of that caliber. Everybody’s pumped up. But schematically, what we try to do, is learn the player, and develop a relationship with them, and adjust to their body and their timeline. So we can have the most beneficial, communicative relationship, with maintaining health.

“Long story short, the working into playing with the Miami Dolphins? You know, between myself and Kyle, we decided that you guys were going to have to wait, you know. But that’s just do to the individual process, that we’re very consistent with, when new guys come to the team. We take nothing of assumption, and make sure that when guys are on the field, there’s no setbacks, and we’re obviously applying that.”
