Dolphins, Tua Tagovailoa agree to terms on four-year, $212 million contract
The Miami Dolphins and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa have agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $212.4 million. The former first-round draft pick was a limited participant in the team’s training camp as he waited on his deal to come through, and now it has. He will average a salary of $53.1 million moving forward.
The former Alabama star’s new contract includes $167 million in guaranteed money, according to Dianna Russini.
Tagovailoa threw for a league-high 4,624 yards with 29 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions in 2023. The Dolphins are coming off of an 11-6 season that saw them fall to the eventual Super Bowl champions in the first round of the playoffs. Tagovailoa is entering his fifth year in the league. Before his extension, he was due to play on a fifth-year option for $23.17 million.
Dolphins commit to Tagovailoa
Tagovailoa was the second quarterback off the board in the 2020 NFL Draft, but is one of the last to get a new contract extension. Trevor Lawrence landed a new contract with the Jaguars that tied him with Joe Burrow for the highest-paid quarterback in the league at $55 million annually.

According to head coach Mike McDaniel, the former Crimson Tide star is continuing to grow as he enters year five. It’s good news for the Dolphins who are on the brink of what feels like a breakthrough after their first-round playoff exit last season.
“It’s been very exciting because at this point, we’re like, ‘Alright, let’s really push ourselves to challenge this guy,’” McDaniel said of Tagovailoa’s growth, “because all he ends up doing is rising to the challenge with what we’ve been asking him to do.”
“Just that connectivity to your game and trying to unearth every single inch and iota of professional development,” McDaniel added. “That, in itself, you’re heading in the right direction.”
