They may not have known it then, but when the Dallas Cowboys drafted Micah Parsons, they brought one of the NFL’s best players into their organization. Parsons was set to play inside linebacker but was quickly spun down to an edge rusher. Since then, he has been terrorizing teams all over the league but specifically, the New York Giants.

There is a reason as to why Parsons puts in a little extra effort when going up against Dallas’ NFC East foe. He thought New York was going to be the one selecting him at No. 11 in the 2021 NFL Draft because they told him so.

“They lied to me,” Parsons said of the Giants. “… People don’t know this. They told me if I fell to 11 that they was going to pick me. When the Cowboys traded back, I said ‘Oh shoot, I’m going to New York.’

Dallas was originally slated to pick at No. 10 but let the Philadelphia Eagles jump up two spots and select wide receiver DeVonta Smith. If New York held their promise, Parsons would be with the Giants. Instead, the Chicago Bears came calling in order to take quarterback Justin Fields.

So the Cowboys were able to trade back and still select Parsons with the 12th overall pick. One that Jerry Jones has now celebrated for many years and folks in New York are now seeing the repercussions on a yearly basis. Parsons still holds onto the broken promise when facing the Giants.

“That’s why I punish the Giants every single time,” Parsons said.

In eight career games against the Giants, Parsons has 21 tackles, six tackles for a loss, 13 quarterback hits, and 4.5 sacks. Only two teams have seen Parsons sack their quarterback more often, having 10.5 against Washington and 5.5 when going up against Carolina.

Given he is likely to sign an extension with the Cowboys this offseason, it’s only going to get worse for the Giants moving forward. A whole lot more Parsons appears to be in their future.

So who did New York wind up taking in the first round that year? Moving all the way down to pick No. 20, wide receiver Kadarius Toney was the selection. After 12 total games, the Giants had to move on from Toney and trade him to the Kansas City Chiefs. Certainly a tough pill for anybody associated with the organization to swallow.
