Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday that all contract extension discussions with Micah Parsons have been with the star linebacker himself. Jones has not contacted Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, and wants to keep it that way.

“The agent is not a concern here… I don’t know his name,” Jones said at the NFL Annual Meeting, via Clarence Hill Jr. of All City DLLS.

Parsons saw Jones’ comments. He wasn’t a fan, saying that no deal will get done with the Cowboys without Mulugheta being involved.

“Facts!! David is the best and I will not be doing any deal without David Mulugheta involved! Like anyone with good sense I hired experts for a reason,” Parsons tweeted. “There is no one I trust more when it comes to negotiating contracts than David! There will be no backdoors in this contract negotiation.”

Jerry Jones taking patient approach with Micah Parsons contract extension

Hill reported that Jones offered Parsons a record-breaking contract that would make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Mulugheta did not take part in that negotiation. If Parsons signs the new contract, he will earn over $40 million per year. The Cleveland Browns recently signed edge rusher Myles Garrett to a deal worth $40 million, the highest for an NFL defender. Cincinnati Bengals receiver Ja’Marr Chase signed a contract worth $40.25 million per season, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback.

Parsons, 25, has one more season remaining on his rookie contract, a fifth-year option Dallas previously picked up. Parsons finished the 2024 season with 43 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 12 sacks. He has tallied double digit sacks in each of his four NFL seasons, totaling 52.5 since coming out of Penn State.

Jones did not show much urgency in getting extensions done last offseason with quarterback Dak Prescott and receiver CeeDee Lamb. He appears to be taking the same approach with Parsons.

“I don’t view it as urgent at all,” Jones said. “Some say using the basis that the earlier you get something done the cheaper, well the earlier you get something done, a lot of times the more mistakes you make. You might want to see a few more cards play. Not just with that particular negotiation, but with the whole team.”

“I know I’m kind of being a little defensive here, but the idea that the only success is getting a contract done at an early time is incorrect, I’d rather pay more and get it right than I had pay less and screw it up.”
