If you heard a loud, collective gasp on Tuesday, it came out of Oxnard, CA. Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons left practice after injuring his leg. While he walked back out there to support his teammates, Parsons did not get another rep and was limited to the sidelines.

Maybe you heard the exhale out of Cowboys training camp too as head coach Mike McCarthy said Parsons is fine. The Defensive Player of the Year candidate will be back on the field on Wednesday, practicing like his normal self.

“Micah Parsons left yesterday’s practice with a left leg injury,” Jon Machota of The Athletic said via Twitter. “Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said Parsons is ‘fine to go’ today.”

According to those at practice on Tuesday, Parsons took a cleat to the leg and was visibly shaken up. This is not the first time an injury scare has been there for Parsons. Doing a punching drill — working on forcing fumbles — ahead of the first preseason game, Parsons injured his wrist and was seen in discomfort then.

These reoccurring injury scares are not something anybody involved with the Cowboys wants to go through. Not Parsons, not the front office, not McCarthy, and not the fans. Losing Parsons would be a devastating blow to Dallas’ desire to make a run to the Super Bowl.

But there is still a certain point of progress they need to make. Parsons has never even appeared in an NFC Championship game. He has a plan as to how the Cowboys are going to win, wanting to hold teams to single digits on a weekly basis.

“I’m trying to be on that Ray Lewis defense,” Parsons said. “I’m trying to hold teams under 10 points. (If opponents) don’t score 10 points, we win the game. … We gotta hold teams under 10 points.”

Parsons will have to be on the field in order for his goal to become a reality. The only issue is — he is never going to take a play off.

Whether it’s training camp in Oxnard, a regular practice back in Frisco, a Week 7 game, or the Super Bowl — Parsons is going to have the same mentality on every rep. Dallas will need him to turn the intensity down just a tad in practice in order to avoid injury.

Two close calls have occurred and thus far, both have been avoided. Relieving news on Wednesday from Mike McCarthy.
