Michael Lorenzen throws 14th no-hitter in Phillies history
Making his second start since coming over in a trade from the Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies RHP Michael Lorenzen fired a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals Wednesday.
It took 124 pitches for Lorenzen to notch the 14th no-hitter in Phillies history. Lorenzen’s no-hitter is the first Phillies no-hitter at home since Roy Halladay in Game 1 of the 2010 NLDS.
The 31-year-old Lorenzen, a first time All-Star this season, struck out five batters and walked four in his masterful performance. Among the 30,406 in attendance at Citizens Bank Park — Lorenzen’s mother Cheryl, wife Cassi and baby daughter, June — who wept in the stands as he retired first baseman Dominic Smith to record the 27th and final out.
“It was incredible walking out for the seventh, for the eighth, for the ninth. It gave me a boost of energy,” Lorenzen said after the game, via MLB.com. “These fans… Man, I’ve never been a part of an organization where the fans are a part of the team… They play a role on this field for us, and they gave me that boost that I needed [in the] seventh, eighth and ninth.”

Michael Lorenzen throws 4th no-hitter of 2023 MLB season
Lorenzen, in the midst of a career season, lowered his ERA to 3.23 on the season, good for third in the National League. He threw eight innings of two-run ball in his first Phillies start against the Miami Marlins last Thursday. But nothing will top this moment — the fourth no-hitter of the 2023 season (New York Yankees’ Domingo German, Detroit Tigers combined and Houston Astros’ Framber Valdez).
“I worked insanely hard to to make this dream come true,” Lorenzen said. “I’ve watched every single one of Nolan Ryan’s no-hitters, because I’ve always wanted to throw a no-hitter. The fact that I just did it in front of this fan base, I can’t believe it.”
