Wink Martindale fires brutal shot at New York Giants: Michigan 'a lot better than being in some places that are 2-7'
Michigan defensive coordinator Wink Martindale appeared to take a shot at the New York Giants, his former employer, when asked about his current job.
Martindale is in the middle of his first season as the Wolverines’ defensive coordinator. He spent the last two years with the Giants in the same position but mutually agreed to part ways in January.
Safe to say, Ann Arbor is better for the man formally known as Don than East Rutherford, New Jersey.
“I haven’t sat down and thought about the long haul when you’re 61,” Martindale said. “You just try to think about tomorrow. But, yeah, I’m glad that I’m here. I love the players that we have. i think that it’s obviously a different game, but, you know, it’s a lot better than being in some places that are 2-7.”
Martindale rejoined the college ranks ahead of the 2024 season for the first time since his time as a DC for Western Kentucky in 2003. Over the next 20 years, he held numerous NFL jobs as an assistant and defensive coordinator.

Martindale won a Super Bowl in 2012 with the Baltimore Ravens as their linebackers coach and was eventually promoted to DC in 2018. He parted ways with the franchise after 2021 before going to the Giants.
The Giants have struggled in 2024, make no mistake. Sitting at 2-7, New York is in last place in the NFC East while questions loom about QB Daniel Jones and the future of the franchise.
Although, it appears GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll will be around for at least the 2025 season.
The Giants, without Martindale of course, are scheduled to play Sunday at 9:30 a.m. ET in Germany against the Carolina Panthers.
Meanwhile, Martindale and the Wolverines are 5-4 a year after winning the national title under Jim Harbaugh and company. They’ll hit the road to take on No. 8 Indiana (9-0) Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
