Michigan QB JJ McCarthy schedules private workout with New York Giants on Sunday
The Giants are sending a group of coaches to Ann Arbor to do a personal workout with former Michigan star J.J. McCarthy, signaling the team may not be set with Daniel Jones and Drew Lock as their quarterbacks.
The Giants own the sixth pick of next month’s draft. And there has been a ton of smoke that suggests they could use the selection to draft a quarterback if one of the elite ones are still available.
Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News said that the Giants will send head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen to Ann Arbor for a workout this Sunday, which also is Easter.
McCarthy worked out in front of scouts at his Pro Day last week. The Giants sent several representatives, but Daboll and Schoen weren’t able to be there. That’s why there is a private workout on a weekend holiday.
Meanwhile, the Giants power duo is headed to North Carolina today to watch Drake Maye at his Pro Day. They also were in Baton Rouge on Wednesday for the LSU Pro Day featuring Jayden Daniels and first-round receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr.

The quarterbacks may be the most popular position when the draft opens with the first round on April 25, from Detroit. Caleb Williams is the consensus pick for the top spot, with the former USC star likely headed to the Bears. Chicago signaled that move when the team traded three-year starter Justin Fields to the Steelers.
The Chargers go No. 5. And new coach Jim Harbaugh likely will go with an offensive tackle. McCarthy was his quarterback at Michigan. But the Chargers have Justin Herbert.
After Williams, McCarthy is there with Daniels and Maye. Some mock drafts believe the top four picks will all be quarterbacks. And that would leave the Giants without good options at No. 6. Bo Nix and Michael Penix also may be quarterback options, but experts don’t view them as top 10 worthy.
The Giants thought they had their franchise quarterback in Daniel Jones, the one-time star from Duke. In fact, New York used the sixth pick of the 2019 draft to select him. But Jones’ health has been an issue. The Giants signed Jones to a four-year, $160 million deal before last season. Then the quarterback injured his neck. And, once he returned to action he tore his ACL, which ended his season.
