Michigan State at Michigan odds: Early point spread released, How to Watch
After three-straight headline-grabbing matchups, Michigan and Michigan State enter the 2024 edition of the in-state rivalry with lowered expectations across the board. But the annual showdown for the Paul Bunyan Trophy is still likely to be a close game.
Michigan opened as a 5.5-point favorite over Michigan State, according to FanDuel. The over/under point total is set at 40.5
But one way or another, the matchup between the Spartans and Wolverines is sure to lead to sparks flying.

The last three matchups between these teams have either been inflection points in the College Football Playoff race — 2021 — or were the center of some newsworthy CFB event.
In 2021, the two squads met in Spartan Stadium for a Top 10 showdown. The Spartans prevailed, 37-33, in a contest where the two teams combined for 947 yards and Heisman hopefuls Aidan Hutchinson and Kenneth Walker III faced off.
The following two meetings were both ultimately lopsided Michigan wins — the Wolverines won the 2022 and 2023 games by a combined score of 79-7 — but were steeped in various controversies.

The 2022 game in Michigan Stadium was followed by the infamous tunnel fracas, sparked when a number of Michigan State players attacked a couple Michigan players.
And the 2023 game came just days after the initial revelations that Michigan and staffer Connor Stalions were alleged to be undertaking an illicit advanced scouting operation.
The 2024 matchup doesn’t have quite as much leading into the matchup. Both squads are sitting in the middle of the Big Ten standings and the biggest impact will be the winner getting closer to bowl eligibility before November hits.
But no matter the records or stakes, there will always be something on the line with these teams, as the in-state trump card for the next 360-odd days will be up for grabs.
