Michigan State and Illinois were clearly going in different directions entering the bye week. Spartans head coach Jonathan Smith and crew fell to Indiana 47-10 in their last game.
“Well, obviously, that was tough,” Smith said postgame. “You’re gonna get exposed against a really good team when you don’t execute very well. And credit to those guys. … Those guys executed at a really high level. The separation between the two execution levels of the two teams, that’s why the score is where it’s at. All three phases.

“Start of the game, it felt like the guys had great energy and we were moving around. First quarter went our way, but then it turned into playing three more quarters against a really good team. In all three phases we just contributed to a lopsided loss. Have to regroup and have got a bye here to absorb this thing. Three opportunities moving forward.”
Michigan State needs two wins but Bielema and Illinois are already bowl eligible. Now it’s a matter of climbing the ladder.
Smith wants to keep the Michigan State locker room positive, but the team will need two wins in its last three games to become bowl eligible, and that could include Illinois.
“I don’t think it’s always about being positive,” Smith said. “I think it’s about optimistic, knowing that we can get some things fixed. You give these locker room speeches, it’s all about words going into action. I’ve liked this group from the start. I think these guys will be back. They’re disappointed – shoot, even embarrassed in there – but I’m pretty confident that they know what’s in front of them. They’ve got three more opportunities to still feel good about a season.”
