Michigan will begin its national title defense with a season opener against Fresno State, a mildly challenging opponent but one that Las Vegas feels the Wolverines should be able to handle based on the early point spread.

According to lines listed by FanDuel, the Wolverines open as a 21.5-point favorite over the Bulldogs. The over/under point total for the game is listed at 46.5 points.

Location: Ann Arbor, MI – Michigan Stadium

If Michigan hopes to repeat its run to the College Football Playoffs in 2024, it’ll have to win games in which the early point spread is as favorable as it is on Saturday. But anything can happen in openers.

The Wolverines have a ton of questions to answer after losing a host of talent to the NFL Draft. Quarterback JJ McCarthy is gone, leaving a leadership void that must be filled.

The good news is the new signal-caller will have some excellent weapons to work with, starting with tailback Donovan Edwards. Edwards has run for more than 1,600 yards the last three years, scoring 15 touchdowns.

Tight end Colston Loveland is also expected to be one of the nation’s best, and he can be a guy that the Wolverines lean on in the passing game.

On the defensive side of the ball there are a host of new faces. But the return of Mason Graham on the inside up front and Josiah Stewart on the edge should help the front seven be sound once again.

The back end will be anchored by Will Johnson, perhaps the best cornerback in the nation. That’s certainly enough to justify the early point spread being three touchdowns.

Michigan and Fresno State are set for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff Saturday in the Big House. The game will be broadcast on NBC.
