The Detroit Lion’s newest star Aidan Hutchinson is a perfect fit for his hometown organization, according to the former Michigan edge rusher. The hard-hitting, smash-mouth style of Detroit football is right up the rookie’s wheelhouse.

“I think the play style is just relentless, it’s nasty,” Hutchinson said. “I think that’s what the whole coaching staff was brought here [for] under Coach [Dan] Campbell, I think that’s that’s the mentality. I come in, I bring that same mentality. I think that’s why I’m a perfect fit for this scheme and for the Detroit grit, so I think I kind of fit that mold.”

Being Michigan’s program record-holder for sacks in a single season after notching 14 for the Wolverines in 2021. His play earned him runner-up honors in the Heisman Trophy race, consensus All-American honors and the No. 2 selection in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Hutchinson is excited to play under first-year head coach Dan Campbell and usher in a new, winning era in the Detroit Lions organization. The new Detroit edge rusher had nothing but positive things to say about the former New Orleans Saints assistant.

“He’s just one of those guys that you want to play for and just by the way he composes himself and does his business,” Hutchinson said of his new head coach. “He’s just one of those guys that you want to buy into because you can tell how passionate he is about the game. I didn’t have to meet him. Just seeing him in interviews and seeing how he even interacts with reporters and how he felt about his team. It just felt so genuine. That’s really what I appreciate the most.”

For Campbell, who is taking over a Detroit Lions team that ranked 30th in the NFL in sacks and 31st in third down defense, Hutchinson is certainly a welcome addition.

Hutchinson, a Michigan native, will stay close to home a will live comfortably doing so. The former Wolverine edge rusher will be able to sign a four-year, $35.7 million contract with the Detroit Lions, including a $23.1 million signing bonus. The contract comes fully guaranteed with a fifth-year option available. Compare Hutchinson’s contract details to No. 1 overall pick Travon Walker‘s, which is a four-year, $37.4 million fully guaranteed deal with a $24.6 million signing bonus.

The former Michigan star was the consensus No. 1 overall selection for months leading up to the draft, but in the final days leading up to the draft, odds switched in favor of Walker. However, it seems to have worked out for the best.

“It’s great,” Hutchinson said about being a Lion. “I’m happy I get to go back to Detroit. Go back to Motor City and hopefully get back to winning some ball games. I’m fired up. They just made a great decision.”
