Adam Schefter, Mike Florio trade jabs, Doug Gottlieb catches stray amid social media dustup

Merry Christmas as the Mike Florio and Adam Schefter beef spilled over into the holidays over reports of Pete Carroll.

But Carroll isn’t currently coaching, so what is all the fuss about? Well, Schefter reported for ESPN that Carroll is interested in the Chicago Bears job in order to return to coaching.

Florio wrote for Pro Football Talk, his own site, that Carroll’s agent fed the information to Schefter to gauge interest from Chicago, not that the Bears would actually be interested. Safe to say, this caused quite the back and forth between Florio and Schefter, and even got Wisconsin-Green Bay basketball coach Doug Gottlieb in the mix!

“Pete Carroll wants another NFL head coaching job, and his agent is wisely pulling the strings of a prominent media member to fuel the effort,” Florio wrote on Twitter, captioning his article about Carroll.

Then, Schefter fired back.

“Everything you say here is 100 percent wrong. Keep up the guess work and Merry Christmas,” Schefter replied.

Then the kicker: Florio clapped back at Schefter again by even referencing Schefter’s dig at Gottlieb, who continues to work as a national radio host while coaching.

“Thank God the college basketball team I coach isn’t in last place in the Horizon League,” Florio wrote.

Whether or not Carroll returns to the NFL to coach the Bears or another team, it caused quite the firestorm of tweets from two prominent members of NFL media. Can we get Florio vs. Schefter on a PPV card?

Carroll last coached in the NFL in 2023, with the Seattle Seahawks. He had a remarkably impressive stint with the organization from 2010-2023, even capturing the Super Bowl XLVIII title.

While coaching the Seahawks, Pete Carroll went 137-89-1 overall (.606). He had a 10-9 record in the playoffs, finishing first in the NFC West five times. His stint ended after a 7-10 season was followed by two 9-8 campaigns, with Seattle missing the playoffs in two of his final three years.

Carroll and the Seahawks then mutually agreed that he would step down in early 2024.

Prior to his time in the NFL, Carroll coached in the college ranks at USC. He spent 2001-09 with the Trojans, winning multiple national championships in the process, though his tenure was not completely without controversy.

USC won titles in 2003 and 2004 during one of the most remarkable runs in program history. Carroll’s tenure would end in disappointment despite the fact that he won 11 or more games in seven straight seasons at one point.
