Mike McCarthy reacts to Giants releasing Daniel Jones, addresses Cowboys pursuit of QB
Assuming quarterback Daniel Jones passes through waivers following his Friday release from the New York Giants (2-8), every team in the NFL will have the ability to sign him as a free agent.
That includes the Dallas Cowboys (3-7), who are without Dak Prescott for the remainder of the season and have scored just 16 points in their last two games with Cooper Rush under center. From a storyline standpoint, Jones to Dallas sounds intriguing, especially considering that the Cowboys host the Giants on Thanksgiving Day.
Will it happen is another question. Head coach Mike McCarthy was asked about Jones on Friday, but said his focus was on the players currently in the building.
“I’ve never really been in the business of looking at players based off the team they are released from. Especially with the timing of the next game,” McCarthy said, via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “He was a prospect I really liked coming out. But we kind of have our head down right now and really focused on working with the guys we have here.”

Before McCarthy’s public comments, NFL insider Josina Anderson reported that the Cowboys “are not currently pursuing” Jones. Dallas, in addition to Rush, has Trey Lance and Will Grier as options at quarterback. Dallas has dropped five games in a row and is well out of the playoff hunt.
The No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Duke, Jones finished his Giants career with a 24-44-1 record and 70 touchdown passes to go along with 47 interceptions.
Jones, 27, signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension in March 2023 after leading the Giants to the playoffs in 2022. Jones guided New York to a 9-6-1 record with a Wild Card Round win that season. But with Jones’ play falling off the last two seasons, New York made the decision to move on. Jones also had a $23 million injury guarantee for next season.
New York will take on a $22.21 million dead cap hit in 2025.
