Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current broadcaster Troy Aikman recently made headlines with his comments on the team’s wide receivers, calling them out for their poor play. Now, head coach Mike McCarthy has responded to those comments.

McCarthy was dismissive of the comments, primarily because of how close he is to the team in comparison to Aikman. At the same time, he did acknowledge that the team has room for improvement.

“They don’t carry any weight with me, because I watch all the tape,” Mike McCarthy said. “I get to go to the meetings, I’m at practice, I’m part of the games. So I have a clear understanding of what and where. Troy’s statement in particular, I don’t agree with the word selection. There is definitely a need for improvement in every position, not just one position that he commented on.”

The language choice that McCarthy likely disagreed with the most was Aikman referring to the team’s wide receivers as being “lazy.” However, McCarthy was not specific in the word selection he took issue with.

At 3-3 on the season, the Dallas Cowboys are now third in the NFC East, behind the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders. There are also five teams currently ahead of them in the Wild Card race, though it’s still early. Still, coming off a blowout loss to the Detroit Lions and a bye week, Dallas does need to find answers quickly.

This season, CeeDee Lamb has unsurprisingly led the Dallas Cowboys in receiving with 32 receptions on 55 targets for 467 yards and two touchdowns. Jalen Tolbert and Jake Ferguson are second and third on the team in receiving.

As a whole, the Dallas Cowboys are second in the NFL in passing yards per game, with 259.3 yards per game. Only the Seattle Seahawks are ahead of them.

Full comments from Troy Aikman on CeeDee Lamb, Dallas Cowboys WRs

In his full comments on the Dallas Cowboys wide receiver, Troy Aikman called out star receiver CeeDee Lamb, in particular, but was not limiting his critiques to Lamb.

“I think the routes are terrible. I think they run terrible routes. And I’ve thought that beyond this year. I think CeeDee has got to improve in his route running. As a quarterback, if you’re not certain where guys are going to be consistently, it’s hard to play the position. That’s what I see,” Aikman said.

“I see guys lazy coming off the line of scrimmage. Sometimes they run. Usually, if they do, it’s because they’re anticipating they’re going to get the football on that play but, if they’re not, they don’t and it all ties together. I’m not impressed with that part of it…It’s hard to play the position if you’re not certain how guys are going to run routes or where they’re going to be. I’m not speaking for Dak [Prescott]. Dak may say, ‘Hey, I think [their routes] are amazing.’ But as a former quarterback watching it, it’s gotta get a lot better.”
