Mike McCarthy reveals first impressions of former Ole Miss star Sam Williams
The Cowboys were huge fans of Sam Williams from the jump. Dallas was elated to land the former Ole Miss star in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and it’s evident Mike McCarthy feels like the Cowboys found a gem in Williams.
Speaking to the media on Friday, the Cowboys head coach spoke about his first impressions of the newest member of the Dallas defensive line.
“Just coming back from the flight over, I think we were all in agreement on that,” McCarthy stated, regarding the Cowboys’ infatuation with Williams. “I mean, I can remember one of the things I do on a daily basis, I have kind of a check-in moment with (Vice President of Player Personnel) Will McClay, and he’s always in there watching college tape. I don’t recall when it was, October, November, and he had Sam on. He was watching Sam in his office. Obviously made a huge impression on both of us that day. Then, at the workout, you could see the ability. I’m going back to the start of it. When he was going the bench press with his teammates, and the camaraderie and the interaction — there’s just so much love about him. And then Dan [Quinn] actually running the workout was awesome.
“You can see right away in the workout that this guy had first-round type ability. We were definitely very excited about him on the plane ride, and went to work on the other questions that we had and obviously we felt very comfortable, and we felt very fortunate that he was still there in the second round.”

Indisputably, McCarthy and company were doing backflips when they turned in the draft card for Williams. Continuing, the leader of the Cowboys sung more praise for the former Ole Miss star, explaining he was born for this.
“I think we can all agree Sam Williams looks like a guy that was born to play professional football,” added McCarthy. “He has the gifts. The physical traits. He had two pass rushers today, and I know we were just in helmets but he was clean in the backfield. He has that kind of ability. He’s in a great place, an excellent system that he’ll definitely benefit from. So, I think he’ll do extremely well early for us.”
As you can see, the Cowboys wholeheartedly believe Sam Williams will be a star. As he begins his NFL journey, time will tell if the former Ole Miss star proves them right.
