During Saturday’s broadcast of the 2025 Kentucky Derby, NBC’s Mike Tirico had to leave due to an illness. Ahmed Fareed shared a new update on why the network’s lead broadcaster had to leave.

Fareed filled in for Tirico and will continue to do so. Tirico had a reaction as a result of a nut allergy and is opting to sit out the rest of the day, Fareed said on the broadcast, although he is feeling better.

Tirico has been the voice of NBC’s Kentucky Derby coverage the last few years. However, it will be Fareed as Saturday’s race draws closer and for post-race coverage.

“You heard Mike Tirico earlier in that report there,” Fareed said after a pre-recorded feature on the California wildfires. “We want to tell you that he does have a nut allergy. He had a reaction earlier today. He is feeling fine now, but he is just going to stay on the sidelines.

“So Mike, I know you’re watching right now. I hope you’re feeling better and getting back to yourself here very soon.”

Tirico also spoke out about his absence with a message via social media. He said he had a “significant reaction” with his allergy, but expressed confidence in the team in place for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.

“Hate being a scratch after making the starting gate @KentuckyDerby,” Tirico wrote. “Just a significant reaction to my nut allergy. If you have one you know how it can knock you down. Profound thanks to @ChurchillDowns for their care. And to our amazing @nbcsports horse racing family. Especially Randy, Jerry & Ahmed Fareed. So lucky to have @SyracuseU fam step in and do such a great job.”

Tirico joined NBC Sports in 2016 after a long run at ESPN and ABC starting in 1991. He succeeded Tom Hammond as the host of Kentucky Derby coverage in 2017, and his list of duties includes play-by-play for Sunday Night Football alongside Cris Collinsworth and leading coverage of the Olympics. Before succeeding Al Michaels on SNF, Tirico hosted the Football Night in America pregame show and served as the voice of Notre Dame football on NBC.

In his absence, Fareed served as the lead host for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby coverage. He also contributes to NBC’s college football and basketball coverage, serving as the host of the network’s College Countdown show while contributing to horse racing and Premier League coverage. He also hosted Football Night in America during the 2023 season while Maria Taylor was on maternity leave.
