Mike Tomlin is all about Bill Belichick becoming the new head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels football team. While appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach was asked about Belichick’s new role and how he could turn North Carolina into a pipeline for the Steelers.
“I think that’s a real possibility. I think it is awesome. I had a couple of sons that played college football. I would send my boys down there to play for him in a hurry,” Tomlin said about Belichick. “You know they’re going to be instructed. You know that their football intellect is going to be developed, the skills relative to the position that they play. Man, I think he’s going to be great for that place and great for college football.”
Mike Tomlin and Bill Belichick know each other well as they faced off 13 times on an NFL field when Belichick was the head coach of the New England Patriots. Belichick and the Patriots won 10 of those games, including the AFC Championship game during the 2016 season. The Patriots then went on to defeat the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI.

Why North Carolina hire Bill Belichick to be its next head coach
As the Patriots head coach, Belichick led the Patriots to nine Super Bowl appearances and won six Super Bowl titles. He’s also the NFL’s second-winningest head coach in NFL history with 333 victories and was named NFL Coach of the Year three times. It’s one of the many reasons why North Carolina hired Belichick despite not having any college coaching experience.
“This is an exciting day for Carolina football and our University,” North Carolina Chancellor Lee H. Roberts said in a press release on Wednesday. “Carolina is committed to excellence and to creating an opportunity to succeed in everything we do, from the classroom to the field of competition. I know after speaking with Coach Belichick that he shares that commitment. His legacy speaks for itself, and we look forward to working together on the next chapter of Carolina football.”
