Mike Tomlin reveals where Steelers need to change after bye week
The bye week is a time to hit the reset button. With that said, few NFL teams needed that reset more than the Pittsburgh Steelers who sit at 2-6. This week allowed them to find solutions as they head into the second half of their season. From what Mike Tomlin said earlier in the week, he thinks they got a lot done with their extra time.
Tomlin said during his press conference that, while he thinks they can get better overall, this was a big week for their offense. They were able to solve a lot of their concerns. Now, he feels like the pieces of that unit will have a better understanding of their individual roles.

“I think we can get better in all areas. Not just offensively but in all three phases. But, specifically as it pertains to the offense, we spent a lot of time talking about how we’re dividing the labor up. Who we’re choosing to feature and how much we’re choosing to feature people,” said Tomlin. “And, obviously, when you go through a trade circumstances like we did with Chase (Claypool), that creates a real avenue to have some of those discussions in terms of the distribution, of playmaking opportunities, who works what areas of the field, etc.”
“(We) feel really good about the work we were able to get done in that component. Or at least in those discussions.”

The Steeler offense is putting up just 15 points per game, which is second worst in the league. Working through the growing pains of a rookie quarterback in Kenny Pickett is part of that. Still, they have enough weapons in players like Najee Harris, Diontae Johnson, Pat Freiermuth, and Georgia Pickens where this offense can be better than what they’ve shown.
Pittsburgh will need an all-around about-face in order to get their 2022 season back on track. With the return of TJ Watt and some of these new offensive repairs, Tomlin and his team may be lined up to do exactly that down the stretch of their schedule.
