Mike Tomlin on if there are going to be changes coming for Steelers: 'Hell yeah'
Mike Tomlin is going to be making some changes. What all does that entail? Right now, we’re not really sure. But the head coach was pretty clear in his post-game press conference following the Steelers’ 30-6 loss to the Texans on Sunday.
Another putrid offensive performance prompted reporters to ask Tomlin about potential changes moving forward. The longtime leader of Pittsburgh was emphatic in his response.
“Hell yeah there’s going to be changes,” Tomlin said, per Brooke Pryor of ESPN.
This is the second time this season the Steelers have been held to less than 10 points. Pittsburgh also suffered an ugly 30-7 loss to the 49ers in the opening week of the season.
Tomlin did not provide any details what what the “changes” could be, but a lot of speculators believe it could be the end of Matt Canada’s run as the offensive coordinator.
Canada joined the Pittsburgh staff in 2020 as the quarterbacks coach. He took over as the team’s offensive coordinator in 2021. There’s no evidence that Tomlin was suggesting the franchise will move on from the offensive coordinator, but that’s the assumption made by many NFL fans.
The Steelers ended Sunday’s game with just 226 yards of total offense and picked up just 12 first downs in the game. Simply put, it was a poor performance all around.
Pittsburgh now sits at 2-2 on the season after the loss.
Steelers gave Matt Canada more prominent role
Just a few days ago, the Steelers decided to give Canada a more prominent role. The goal was to develop a better connection with quarterback Kenny Pickett.

Mizzou coach sounded off
“Canada will continue calling plays, but will also be working directly with Pickett on a daily basis,” NFL insider Jordan Schultz wrote on Twitter. “The 51-year-old was hired in 2020 as QBs coach, and then promoted to coordinator prior to the 2021 season. Pittsburgh believes in Canada and they anticipate this making a big difference.”
After Pittsburgh’s Week 2 win over the Cleveland Browns, Canada seemed to understand the offense wasn’t performing well enough. But he admitted there’s really no quick answer.
“We’re not executing well enough,” Canada said ahead of Week 3 against the Las Vegas Raiders, via the team’s website. “If a play doesn’t work, it’s all of us, we gotta fix it. We’re gonna keep going and we’ll continue to fight and see if we can get those completions better, the runs better, all of it.
“Every facet of our game could be a little bit better. There’s no magical answer to this, I don’t believe, other than I’m very proud and excited about where our players are at with it. There’s nobody pointing fingers… Nobody throwing in the towel.”
