Miles Sanders injury: Panthers RB carted off field in first half vs. Giants

In the second quarter of the Panthers’ showdown against the New York Giants on Sunday, Carolina running back Miles Sanders suffered an apparent lower-leg injury and had to be carted off the field. Before leaving the game, Sanders recorded one carry for four rushing yards.

Sanders has been Carolina’s second option in the backfield this season behind Chubba Hubbard. Sanders entered the game on Sunday with 134 yards and a touchdown on 36 carries this season. He’s also hauled in 21 catches for 98 yards.

This is Sanders’ second season with the Panthers. On March 15, 2023, he signed a four-year, $25.4 million contract with the organization. Miles Sanders’ debut campaign with the Panthers wasn’t ideal, as the veteran RB recorded career lows in carries, rushing yards and yards per carry.

The Panthers’ backfield hasn’t been spectacular this season, either. The team is averaging 101.3 rushing yards per game, the eighth-least in the NFL. Nonetheless, the Panthers boast a 10-0 lead at halftime against the Giants, as of this report.

NFL referee Shawn Hochuli announces penalty in German

The NFL has gone international, and referees aren’t allowing the moment to pass them by. In the first half of the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers’ showdown in Munich, Germany on Sunday, official Shawn Hochuli broke out his German to announce a penalty to the crowd.

The German fans in attendance went wild at the sound of their home language being spoken in association with American football, nearly drowning out Hochuli’s voice. The 46-year-old referee couldn’t help but grin at the fans’ response.

This isn’t the first time a Hochuli has called a penalty in the language of a foreign nation. In 2005, Ed Hochuli, Shawn’s father, was an official for the NFL’s first game in Mexico. Like his son, Hochuli paid respect to the crowd, announcing a penalty in Spanish.

Although Shawn reminded NFL fans of his father on Sunday, he still has a long way to go to match his father’s legacy. Shawn began to official in the NFL in 2014 and was promoted in 2018 from back judge to referee, following the retirement of his father.

Perhaps with a few more years under his belt, Shawn can announce a penalty in front of a Super Bowl crowd. After all, Ed refereed two Super Bowls in his career.
