The Minnesota Vikings rookie defensive back and former Georgia Bulldog Lewis Cine left the field on Sunday with a severe injury leg in the first quarter of the Vikings’ victory against the New Orleans Saints in London. Cine had to be taken off the field on a stretcher with his leg secure in an air cast. Since then, it has been revealed that Minnesota’s No.32 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft suffered a compound fracture of the leg. On Monday, Minnesota released a statement on Cine revealing that their rookie would stay in London to undergo surgery on the broken leg.

“After suffering an injury in yesterday’s game, Lewis Cine was immediately transported to a local hospital where he underwent a successful preparatory procedure in advance of his scheduled surgery tomorrow, Tuesday, October 4,” said Minnesota in the statement.

“Following surgery, Lewis will remain in London to continue his initial recovery process before returning to Minnesota at the appropriate time. A member of the Vikings medical staff will also stay in London until Lewis returns. Head Coach Kevin O’Connell and members of the Vikings organization have been in constant communication with Lewis, who is in great spirits.”

No recovery timetable has been set for Cine so far. The Vikings will likely further assess the injury and recovery after the surgery is completed. Unfortunately, compound fractures of the leg are a complex injury to recover from quickly. No word has been given on whether Minnesota will place Cine on the injured reserve list for the rest of the season, but the rookie will have an arduous uphill battle to overcome in order to get back onto the field this season.

Vikings update the status of Lewis Cine after devastating injury in London

NFL Network sideline reporter Stacey Dales announced, and gave a full update on the Minnesota Vikings rookie safety.

“Kevin O’Connell on Lewis Cine, says he has a lower leg fracture. Devastating blow for the rookie who was taken to the hospital immediately. He’ll be having surgery here in London – medical team will stay with him until he’s ready to make the transition back to Minnesota,” Dales tweeted.

Cine was been transported to a local hospital in London after suffering what looked to be a serious lower-leg injury. The former Georgia star was running in the open field against the New Orleans Saints Sunday morning when his ankle seemingly snapped mid-play.

You can view video of the injury below, but be warned, it is very graphic.
