Mississippi State and Tennessee are set to square down in a showdown of teams that like to run fairly up-tempo on offense and could produce a lot of points on Saturday.

Tennessee has had a phenomenal year so far, in College Football Playoff contention and hoping to have a special season under coach Josh Heupel. Mississippi State has had a rough go of it in its first year under coach Jeff Lebby.

According to lines listed by FanDuel, Tennessee will enter the game as a 23.5-point favorite over Mississippi State. The over/under points total for the contest has been set at 60.5 points.

That sets the expectation going into the game: The Volunteers are a heavy favorite, and the Bulldogs will have their work cut out for them making it a contest in Knoxville.

Tennessee has been excellent so far this season, winning some close games that have put the team in position to potentially claim a College Football Playoff berth.

It started with an early 25-15 win over Oklahoma, then continued with a home overtime win against Florida and a 24-17 result against Alabama. Those are some quality wins.

Quarterback Nico Iamaleava has only gotten better as time has gone on, and he’s playing at a very high level at the moment.

On the other side, quarterback play has been a bit of an issue at times. The Bulldogs have used both Blake Shapen and Michael Van Buren, but have landed on the latter of late to get the job done.

Unfortunately for Mississippi State, its defense has not been up to the task. The unit has yielded at least 34 points to each of its last five opponents, including a whopping 58 points against Arkansas recently.

Until that changes, it’s going to be very difficult for the Bulldogs to pull off any wins against quality teams. That’s why they play, though.

Tennessee has won seven of the last eight meetings in the series, dating back to 1995. That included a win in the 1998 SEC Championship Game.
