Mississippi State and Texas A&M are set to square off in a showdown of former SEC West teams looking to add another win to the books.

The teams have had very different starts to the season, almost an inverse of each other. Texas A&M lost its season opener but has won five straight, while Mississippi State won its season opener but has lost the next five.

According to lines listed by FanDuel, Texas A&M will open as a 15.5-point favorite over Mississippi State. The over/under point total for the contest has been set at 53.5 points.

That sets the expectation for the game: The Aggies are a significant favorite and should be in good shape heading into the showdown in Starkville.

Texas A&M will have the added luxury of a bye week before this contest, giving the team even more time to get healthy. First and foremost that means starting quarterback Conner Weigman should be good to go.

Weigman returned to action last week and helped Texas A&M smoke Missouri 41-10. He looked the part.

But the Aggies have options in the event he struggles, as freshman Marcel Reed was a revelation during the three games he filled in for Weigman. The other weapons around him also developed quite a bit.

Texas A&M is deep in the backfield, featuring LeVeon Moss (609 yards rushing) and Amari Daniels (245 yards). That gives the Aggies something firm to lean on offensively.

Mississippi State’s problem is that it hasn’t established much. Even the quarterback position has been a bit of a revolving door early in the season.

One of the challenges is that the offense operates quickly but not very efficiently, often leaving the defense in bad positions.

That’ll have to change if the Bulldogs hope to make it a game against the Aggies.

Mississippi State and Texas A&M will kick off at 4:15 p.m. ET on Saturday with a broadcast on the SEC Network.
