Monty Williams makes bizarre statement on Pistons rookies, daughters
Detroit Pistons head coach Monty Williams has been very impressed by rookies Ausar Thompson and Marcus Sasser during the NBA Summer League.
How impressed, you ask? Well, it looks like Williams just might be ready to welcome the pair into his family. Joining the ESPN broadcast from Las Vegas Friday, the 51-year-old said he’d like to “take them home” and “arrange a marriage” with his daughters.
“I’ve become a fan of Ausar and Sass,” Williams said, via Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press. “Their toughness, we saw it down the stretch. Those two guys just made play after play and played winning basketball, which is something that makes me want to take them home and arrange a marriage with my daughters.”
Thompson, the fifth overall pick in last month’s NBA Draft out of Overtime Elite, and Sasser, the 25th overall pick out of Houston, are in their coach’s good graces following the Pistons’ 94-90 victory over the Toronto Raptors Wednesday. Thompson scored 17 points on 7-of-14 from the field with nine rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks. Sasser, meanwhile, amassed 15 points on 5-of-15 shooting with seven assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Thompson’s prowess on both ends of the court has particularly stood out, an ability he talked about after the game.

“When I’m unable to score, I focus on contributing in other areas to remain on the court,” Thompson said, via MLive.com. “Although I am confident in my offensive abilities, these games where scoring hasn’t been prominent have forced me to impact the game differently.”
Monty Williams excited to coach young Pistons core
Thompson and Sasser are just a couple of multiple high draft picks looking to bring the Pistons back to relevancy. They join a group which consists of Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren, Isaiah Stewart and James Wiseman among others.
“You can see the talent of this group and you see the size. But what I’m really impressed by is the people,” Williams said last month, via ESPN. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a press conference for a head coach and all the players show up. That’s what I see: a hunger, a desire. They all want it.
“If you’re asking about similarities to Phoenix [at the start], that was what was similar. Those guys were hungry, they wanted it.”
