NFL insider Jordan Schultz shared more information about his report on Deion Sanders speaking to Jerry Jones about the Dallas Cowboys head coaching vacancy. Schultz said Sanders and Jones have “mutual interest” but an interview hasn’t been scheduled yet.

“Jerry Jones and Deion Sanders have spoken, and while a formal interview hasn’t been scheduled yet, there is mutual interest,” Schultz wrote on X. “My understanding is that the two are going to stay in contact on this.

Another NFL insider, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, also shared information on Sanders and Jones. As many others have speculated, former Cowboys star Deion Sanders — who has talked to Jerry Jones regularly for the last few decades — has some interest in the Dallas job, sources say,” Rapoport wrote on X. “Cowboys have at least some interest, as well. The two sides will stay in contact.”

Deion Sanders, who finished up his second season as the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, has ties with the Cowboys as he played for the team from 1995 to 1999. During his time in Dallas, Sanders was named to the Pro Bowl four times, the All-Pro Team four times and helped the Cowboys win the Super Bowl in 1995.

Following a successful playing career, Sanders went on to become a coach. After spending years coaching in high school, the 57-year-old became the head coach at Jackson State in 2020. In his three seasons at Jackson State, Sanders won the SWAC championship twice, was named SWAC Coach of the Year twice and led the team to two Celebration Bowl appearances.

Following the 2022 season, Sanders was hired by Colorado to be its next head coach. After a 4-8 season in 2023, Sanders turned things around in 2024, leading the Buffaloes to a 9-4 record and an appearance in the Alamo Bowl. It was the first winning season for Colorado since 2020 when the team finished 4-2 in a COVID-shortened year.

Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, has kicked off its search for a new head coach after parting ways with Mike McCarthy. Jones is hoping the next head coach can get the Cowboys their first Super Bowl appearance since Sanders was part of the team in 1995.
