Myles Garrett gives puzzling defense of Deshaun Watson, admonishes fans for booing
Deshaun Watson left today’s game with what will reportedly be a season-ending injury. With that, Myles Garrett took a stand for his teammate considering the reaction that it got, including at Huntington Bank Field.
While speaking postgame after a 21-14 loss for the Browns, Garrett addressed all that Watson has dealt with following the injury. With some of Cleveland’s own fans booing him, he spoke on the matter during the press conference in saying what their quarterback has given to them.
“No one deserves that,” said Garrett. “I hate using the word deserves. I’m usually consistent saying earned. He hasn’t earned it and he doesn’t deserve it. Man does pretty much everything right. He’s been a, you know, model citizen through college and most of the pros. He plays the game as hard as anyone I’ve seen. Puts everything on the line, willing to throw his body out there. He plays the game at 100 miles per hour.”
Again, much of this has come with the majority of the outside opinion at this point of Watson. Whether due to scandal or his play, he has been viewed much different than he once was as a football player earlier in his career.
Still, an Achilles is just the latest of what Watson has been through says Garrett.
“I’ve seen him work his a** off to, you know, get back in here and, you know, put a smile on his face. You know, try to put everything that’s outside the facility behind him,” said Garrett. “You know, death threats, people coming to his house. People, you know, going after his family. Like I said, no one deserves that.”

Watson was actually in the middle of one of his better games this season before the injury just ahead of halftime. He was 15-17 (88.2%) overall for 128 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals. From there, Dorian Thompson-Robinson and then Jameis Winston took over for the Browns.
However, while still officially unconfirmed, this would end the third season for Watson in Cleveland. They’re off to a 1-6 start with him completing 63.4% of his passes during that time for 1,148 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Regardless of how some see Watson, the Browns have to show their support of him, especially now. Garrett was among the first to do so with his defense of him to the media and, as such, versus a number in the fanbase.
“There’s a risk to be injured and he took that risk. We have to be there for him as a team, as an organization,” said Garrett. “We can’t look down on a guy because of any mistakes on the field or anything off the field, you know. We don’t have anything, we don’t have any moral high ground to look down on a guy
