The NASCAR Cup Series points standings have changed after the governing body penalized Chase Briscoe. With the No. 19 team getting docked 100 points, Briscoe now has -67 points and is 89 points behind 16th in the standings (the playoff cutoff).

Briscoe and his team were penalized for modifications to the car’s spoiler at the Daytona 500. Crew chief James Small is suspended for the next four races, the team was fined $10,000 and lost 10 playoff points. Here’s a look at the updated playoff standings.

More on Chase Briscoe and the NASCAR Cup Series points

NASCAR also announced that Todd Gilliland and Cody Ware were both docked 10 points for not having ballast in the proper ballast containers for pre-race tech. Briscoe and Ware are now out of the top 30, while Gilliland dropped from 22nd to 27th. The penalties also led to Ross Chastain and Carson Hocevar moving up to 29th and 30th, respectively.

This is not how Briscoe wanted to start his career with Joe Gibbs Racing. The 30-year-old is taking over for Martin Truex Jr. who announced his retirement last year. Briscoe had a strong showing at the Daytona 500 on Sunday as he finished fourth in the race.

Chase Briscoe is one of the drivers on the rise. In 144 Cup Series races, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year has earned two victories and 30 top-10 finishes.
