The 2023 season is over. We have declared our champion, Ryan Blaney. Now the NASCAR standings are final and we have the points totals. Once the Championship 4 is decided, drivers are still fighting for the spots in the standings that they can still pick up. Finishing better means more money and it’s a nice way to cap off the year.

Denny Hamlin harped on finishing fifth in the NASCAR standings if he can’t be in the championship. He did just that. There were other surprises, too. Ty Gibbs, the Cup Series Rookie of the Year, ended up finishing 18th overall, a really strong showing for the young driver. Kevin Harvick finishes 13th overall in his final season.

Other notable finishes in the NASCAR standings: Bubba Wallace, career-best 10th overall. Previous best was 21st overall. Chris Buescher and Brad Keselowski finish top-10 to give RFK Racing a lot to be proud of.

Check out the rest of the standings below.

Ryan Blaney tops NASCAR standings with championship

Phoenix has received a lot of flack. It doesn’t make for the most exciting racing, but it serves its role well, in my opinion. There are tracks that put on better races, and arguably with the Next Gen car, an intermediate oval would be the best.

However, you don’t want this championship to be at a track that’s unpredictable. It needs to be a track that allows cars to move up during the race. Which Phoenix did, on long runs. Granted, I would like to see more tire degradation. Still, we saw Blaney pass Kyle Larson in this race multiple times.

Ryan Blaney had the best car and was the best driver on the day. He was rewarded for that with a championship and a P2 finish in the race. Plain and simple. Chastain was the only driver who successfully aero-blocked Blaney in the race to the point he couldn’t pass.

If Christopher Bell doesn’t go out with a brake rotor failure, this race is even more compelling. Bell and Blaney moved up in the field together after starting outside of the top-10.

For all of his hard work, Ryan Blaney is the NASCAR champion and sits on top of the season standings at the end of 2023.
