NASCAR fans furious with controversial finish, Kyle Larson double overtime win at Indy
Kyle Larson took the checkered flag in Sunday’s Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, though it didn’t come without some controversy.
With Larson leading the race after the second overtime restart, Ryan Preece spun out on the back straightaway. Larson and the leaders had yet to reach the white flag. Rather than throw the yellow out as Preece wasn’t moving, NASCAR allowed them to take the white flag. The yellow flag then came out and Larson won the race under caution.
A lot of fans watching at home felt NASCAR should have thrown the yellow flag out when it was clear Preece couldn’t get off the back straightaway. A third overtime restart would have commenced, but obviously, that didn’t happen. Larson was awarded the victory under caution and will soon kiss the bricks.
“#NASCAR What a horrible decision made by NASCAR, Ryan Preece was stopped for 3/4 of a lap and they just stared at him and as soon as the leaders crossed the line …boom,” one fan wrote on X.

NASCAR fans aren’t gonna forget this one any time soon.
“So we’re just going to wait to throw a caution two corners and white flag after a driver makes contact with the wall and gets beached on the track?” another fan tweeted.
Kyle Larson gets it done in Brickyard 400
The race, however, is official and Larson is the winner. It’s his first career Brickyard 400 win and his fourth of the season. Larson entered Sunday’s race three points behind Chase Elliott for the regular season points championship. He is now ahead with just four regular season races remaining. As the only four-time winner this season, Larson sits atop the playoff standings as well.
“I think we prove a lot that you can never hold us down,” Larson said after the race. “We always seem to recover. Whether the next week after a crash or during a race when a pit stop doesn’t go our way.”
