NASCAR fans stuck in massive traffic jam outside of Pocono Raceway with race underway
With Sunday’s Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono Raceway well underway, many NASCAR fans have yet to make it to the racetrack.
Fans are reportedly lined up at a four-mile standstill from I-80 trying to get to Pocono as the road was previously closed due to severe weather. Significant delays remain away from the track, according to Google Maps.
“Severe weather that moved through our area earlier today caused additional traffic delays,” Pocono Raceway said in a statement. “Thank you for your understanding & patience. The safety of our fans & event staff is our highest priority.”
Sunday’s race has been advertised as a sellout after last year’s race boasted its largest crowd since 2010. 50,000 grandstand tickets and 3,300 camping spots were sold in 2023 to see Denny Hamlin’s record seventh Cup Series victory at the Tricky Triangle.

Joe Gibbs Racing the team to beat at Pocono?
Hamlin is once again a favorite this year, along with his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Martin Truex. Truex is set to call it a career at the end of the 2024 Cup Series season, and Pocono found a way to honor him during Sunday’s race.
“Truex Jr” has been painted at the start-finish line at the Tricky Triangle in what could be his final race at the 2.5-mile track. He said Saturday the gesture from Pocono is “special.” Truex just hopes he’s the first car to cross it on Lap 160.
“I’d say I’m ready to embrace it,” Truex told Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports. “I was actually surprised at seeing that two days ago. And you know, as a driver, I’ve been around. And you just don’t ever feel like you’re deserving of things like that. For Pocono to do that, for the speedway to do that is very special. I think it means a lot to me and my family. Definitely really cool to see and hopefully we’re the first one to cross it tomorrow.”
