NASCAR hit Chase Briscoe‘s team hard with a penalty after the Daytona 500, a penalty that put the team way behind the 8-ball to open the 2025 season.

Briscoe’s team was docked 100 points, 10 playoff points and fined $100,000, while crew chief James Small was suspended for four races over modifications to the car’s spoiler at Daytona.

Joe Gibbs Racing will appeal the penalty, and a FOX Sports broadcast crew provided an update on that appeal during the Ambetter Health 400 at Atlanta on Sunday.

“Just to update them, they’re coming off Daytona,” FOX’s Jamie Little said. “After the race they had a monster penalty. The team is appealing it, and I talked to his crew chief, James Small. He said they don’t know yet when they’re going to hear the appeal, NASCAR may wait as long as after Circuit of the Americas. So as of now everybody’s in tack, crew chief is in the box.”

The Circuit of the Americas race is set to take place on March 2, a week from today.

As far as the racing goes, Chase Briscoe is in contention at the Ambetter Health 400. He was in the top 10 at the time of Little’s report.

“Just to update, Chase Briscoe’s making his second start for Joe Gibbs Racing, having a pretty good day,” Little said. “They just made a slight air pressure adjustment for Chase. He was just a little bit tight, that’s kind of been his struggle today.”

Chase Briscoe managed to avoid a wreck earlier in the day when he was sideswiped by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in a wreck that eventually claimed Chase Elliott, Brad Keselowski and Corey LaJoie.

Coming off a turn, Stenhouse went from the middle lane to the low side of the track trying to avoid a driver in front of him. Only, he hit Chase Briscoe‘s car and then pinballed back to the outside of the track.

He struck Elliott there and the toe link for Elliott reportedly immediately gave way.

The aftermath of the wreck also caught LaJoie in it, though he hit the wall with his back bumper and didn’t appear to be all that worse for the wear. Still, it was an unfortunate incident that will cost a few of the drivers involved, starting with Elliott.
