NASCAR is breaking a crazy record with Xfinity-Cup Series Monday doubleheader at Charlotte
A wet weekend has turned into a record-breaking Monday for NASCAR at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Saturday’s Xfinity Series race and Sunday’s Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 both had to be pushed back due to rain, so NASCAR is running a double-header on Memorial Day. The Xfinity Series took the track first, with coverage beginning at 11:00 a.m. ET, but rain has played a factor and it will now run after the Cup Series race, which is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. — and if that sounds like a lot of racing, that’s because it is.
According to FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass, the combined 900 miles of racing between the Xfinity Series and Cup Series at Charlotte on Monday is a NASCAR record.
“The 900 miles of NASCAR national series racing in one day would be a record,” tweeted Pockrass.
That’s a pretty insane stat to begin what should be a wild racing day. Fans, drivers and the media alike are in for a Memorial Day treat, courtesy of NASCAR.
Additionally, two drivers will race the full 900 miles on Monday, as Ty Gibbs and Justin Haley will pull double duty. The former was already slated to do so, but Haley took over Kyle Busch’s ride for the Xfinity Series race due to the two-time NASCAR champion choosing to focus on the Coca-Cola 600.
As you can see, a history-making day is on the docket for Charlotte Motor Speedway on Monday. Boogity boogity boogity, let’s go racing.

More on Coca-Cola 600, Starting Grid
Moreover, as a result of the canceled practice and qualifying runs, the starting lineup for the Coca-Cola 600 was automatically set according to the rule book instead of performance in qualifiers. Charlotte Motor Speedway will see William Byron in the No. 24 car start from the pole position.
“Byron won the Cup Series’ most recent points race at Darlington Raceway and leads the series with three victories in 2023,” explained NASCAR’s official release. “The performance metric based on Darlington sets the starting lineup for the longest race of the schedule, factoring 15% of fastest lap time position, 25% of the driver’s final race finish position, 25% of the owner’s final race finish position and 35% of the owner points position.”
